Visiting guide
Respectful travel, thoughtful photographs
A memorable visit leaves room for everyone. Check the rules, give worshippers space, and plan a route that suits your needs.
These are living places of worship. Customs, access and photography rules vary. Follow the signs and guidance at each site.
Check before photographing
Look for photography notices at every building. Outdoor permission does not imply permission inside. Meiji Jingu prohibits photos and videos at its main sanctuary and requires permission for promotional photography. Ask when you are unsure.
Give people and ceremonies space
Keep your voice low and avoid blocking paths while taking pictures. Ask before photographing people, and leave room for worshippers. Kiyomizu-dera specifically asks visitors not to obstruct others with group photographs.
Notice the threshold
Before entering a temple hall, check whether shoes must be removed. Use the shelves or bags provided and wear socks. A moment at the entrance helps you notice both footwear and photography instructions.
Care for the grounds
Stay on permitted routes and take rubbish with you. Check rules for food, smoking and equipment. Kiyomizu-dera prohibits smoking, drones, tripods and monopods, while Meiji Jingu restricts eating and drinking to designated areas.
Plan a route that suits you
Check official accessibility information and ask about your intended route. Sensō-ji has a lift to the main hall and information about accessible toilets; Kiyomizu-dera publishes a wheelchair route. Confirm the facilities you need before you set out.
