History
Ōtomo Chikayo moved the shrine from Mount Hongū to its present foothill location in 1408. It was ranked as a national middle shrine in 1871.

Access & etiquette
Under rules effective 15 September 2026, visitors must request permission at the shrine office before photography and agree to its conditions. Wedding pre-shoots alone require a ¥5,000 offering.
